Why Should We Care About S.T.E.M?

What is S.T.E.M.?

According to Live Science.com, "S.T.E.M. is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach." People in S.T.E.M. related jobs use their knowledge in those specific areas to solve real-life problems.

S.T.E.M. also stimulates growth in areas like:

Creativity

Critical Thinking

Independent Thinking

Brainstorming

Problem-solving

Teamwork

These are all critical skills that are needed in any profession. Enhancing our children's S.T.E.M. education is imperative to their success and will help them become innovators of the future.

Why is S.T.E.M. Important?

The way we search for and receive products, services, and information is changing rapidly. Our children need to start learning and practicing these critical principles now so that they can become the future innovators our world needs.

Here is a break down from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

"Science workers study the physical and natural

world through observation and experimentation."

"Technology workers use science and engineering

to create and troubleshoot computer and information

systems."

"Engineers and engineering technicians use math,

science, and technology to solve real-world problems.

The work often involves developing systems, structures,

products, or materials."

"Math workers use numerical, spatial, and logical

relationships to study and solve problems."

Activities

With many children transitioning to online learning, you may be concerned that they are spending too much time on their computers and tablets. Here are some activities that your children can do that does not require any screen time!

Backyard Coding- Left Brain Craft Brain

This activity teaches your child about conditionals, specifically If and Then!

Let's Build a Structure Out of Legos- Brain Power Boy

In this activity, your child will use computational thinking (taking a large problem, breaking it down, and understanding it in simpler terms) and create an algorithm (a set of simple instructions) to build a Lego structure!

Binary Bracelets-Science-U

Let's make a bracelet using Binary code with the help of the ASCII(American Standard Code for Information Interchange)

Albert Einstein said, "To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science."

This is why we believe incorporating S.T.E.M. principles into our children's core curriculum is so critical. No matter when or where a child is learning, they should be accommodated.

It is why we offer classes that can be done online or in-person. Our programs are tailored to get young learners interested and excited about S.T.E.M.

Critical and creative thinking, being able to solve problems and the ability to thrive within a group will help our children succeed in any career choice they make.
